Body, child, conscience vs the state

Some constraints do not show up on a tax return. They appear when the state demands military service, mandates medical treatment, compels school attendance, or punishes speech and conscience. This guide explains what self captures, how it differs from infra, and how families and individuals should weight it when structuring where they live.

What `self` measures

The self axis scores individual liberty against state compulsion in indicative form. Higher scores when:

No conscription or only vestigial registration without service
Homeschooling is clearly legal with tolerable oversight (see dedicated homeschool status)
Health and body mandates are limited relative to peer countries
Parental authority in education and medical decisions faces fewer default overrides
Conscience protections (speech, religion, objection) are comparatively strong

Lower scores when:

Active conscription or imminent expansion of draft
School compulsion with narrow exemptions
Broad public-health or workplace mandates persist beyond acute emergencies
Minor medical or educational decisions default to state override
Social credit or speech regimes chill dissent

self is intentionally decoupled from economy and infra in recent rubrics so a wealthy country with excellent hospitals can still score low on bodily and family autonomy — and vice versa.

Body — medical and physical autonomy

Ranking does not take sides in every culture war; it compares how much the state routinely overrides individual medical choice relative to other territories. Vaccination requirements for school entry, lockdown enforcement intensity, access to alternative practitioners, and end-of-life rules all feed the indicative score.

If medical autonomy is non-negotiable, push self weight sharply in Ranking and read country context beyond scores — law changes fast in health policy.

Child — education and family authority

Compulsory schooling ages, truancy enforcement, and social-service intervention thresholds define how much parental discretion remains. Homeschool legality is surfaced separately (free, regulated, restricted, banned, grey, unknown) because it is a common expat decision trigger.

Conscience — speech, religion, service

Conscription is the clearest binary for many movers: several European and Asian territories still maintain draft or national service. Objector regimes vary; some are punitive.

Religious practice, blasphemy laws, and political speech curbs also move self. Remote workers from liberal democracies sometimes underestimate how daily life feels under stricter moral codes — even when tax is excellent (UAE, Singapore).

`self` vs `infra`

High infra with low self describes capable welfare states with strong norms of compliance. High self with low infra describes light-touch states where you self-provide services. Your family may want a deliberate mix — weight both.

Using homeschool status without overfitting

Homeschool codes are indicative categories from homeschool.json merged at seed time — not legal opinions. They help filter territories before you hire education counsel. Unknown means unclassified, not "illegal."

When self weight is high, filter the map mentally by homeschool free or regulated before deep-diving visa rules.

Family leaving compulsory-school jurisdiction — Max self; verify homeschool status; add infra for special needs support.

Young adult avoiding draft — Max self; confirm gender-age rules and dual-citizen treatment.

Health-freedom priority — High self; do not proxy with US-state analogies; read territory row.

Limits

Scores cannot capture neighbourhood culture or employer pressure.
Dual citizenship may subject you to extraterritorial obligations (e.g. draft in country of citizenship while residing elsewhere).
Emergency laws temporarily shift mandates without immediate score updates.
LGBT+ legal safety and women's rights intersect self but deserve dedicated human research beyond any index.

Gender, age, and draft equity

Conscription rules often differ by gender and age bracket. A territory may score low on self for young men yet appear acceptable to older couples — or the reverse where national service expands. Read primary legislation; Ranking encodes a territory-level indicative summary, not your household's eligibility table.

Religious and cultural law

Blasphemy, apostasy, and public morality enforcement affect daily conscience freedom beyond homeschool. Expat enclaves can mask how locals experience law. Visit outside the bubble; speak with residents who share your obligations, not only relocation agents.

Pairing `self` with Business residence

Founders sometimes incorporate in a low-self hub while residing in a high-self country — or the opposite. CFC and management-and-control rules may attribute company profits to where you live. Personal self and Business CFC scores should be read together on country business pages.

Vaccination and school entry

Even where homeschool is free, childhood vaccination schedules may gate public services or travel. self aggregates mandate intensity; it does not list every jab. Medical objectors should read both self and local public-health law, not only homeschool badges.

Digital surveillance and speech

Mass surveillance, social media offences, and workplace speech codes affect conscience freedom for remote workers publishing globally from a strict jurisdiction. High economy hubs are not immune — weigh self if your income depends on public communication.

When children are involved, interview other expat parents on enforcement experience — qualitative, but fills gaps scores cannot. Then confirm with counsel; anecdotes are not law.

Minority and gender dimensions

Laws affecting women, LGBT families, and religious minorities intersect self but deserve dedicated human-rights research beyond any single score. A territory may score moderately overall while failing a specific family configuration — do not outsource moral fit to integers.

If military service is the concern, verify whether dual citizenship triggers obligations in either country — self scores the territory on the map, not every passport you hold.

Weight self before signing a long lease or buying property — reversing a move driven by mandate surprises is costlier than reversing a short tourist visa experiment.
